As I mentioned earlier today, party punches and fall cocktails were a hit inclusion at most gourmet tailgates at the International Gold Cup this past Saturday. Kathryn Corneilus one of the members of the winning tailgate party shares with us her recipe for Apple Cobbler Party Punch, a perfect inclusion for any autumn gathering.
Apple Cobbler Party Punch
1 gallon apple juice
1/2 bottle sparkling apple cider
3/4 bottle Marker’s Mark (750ml)
2/3 bottle Laird’s Apple Jack (750ml)
1 – 2 liter bottle diet ginger ale
2 red apples, sliced
2 green apples, sliced
10-12 dashes ground cinnamon
Combine all ingredients in a large punch bowl. Serve with ice in a punch cup or rocks glass.
Saturday was the 70th running of the International Gold Cup races out in The Plains, Virginia. The weather was perfect for a day filled with gourmet tailgate parties, fancy hats, and good old fashioned steeplechase races.
After tasting little bites of everything from an Alsatian tart to lobster bisque to pumpkin cheesecake, Bonnie Benwick from The Washington Post, Alyson Browett from the Edible Complex, Michael Birchenall from Food Service Monthly and I decided the winner of the gourmet tailgate competition to be Kathryn Sandhoff’s group out on the North Rail. Serving dishes such as Lebanese potato salad, endive with caramelized pears and blue cheese, pumpkin shooters and deconstructed guacamole salad (see below), they were the clear winners as their creativity and originality out-shown the competition.
Not to forget their college days at Penn State, Jenny Cahill prepared their usual “gin bucket” and brought along the serving pieces (otherwise known as turkey basters).
Consisting only of gin (and any gin will do), Fresca, lemons and limes, this drink is to be consumed only by filling and shooting the liquid out of the turkey baster into your mouth. How fun!
The group’s mixologist extraordinare, Kathryn Corneilus prepared a delightful punch – check back this afternoon for the recipe.
The prize for the winning team – a free tailgate location at next year’s race! Congrats to the Sandhoff Party!
