To open those uber-tightly closed jars, try using latex dish washing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes getting them open easier.

I usually take the handle of a metal fork and strike all around the lid, hard enough to dent it. About a dozen strikes are enough for the lid to screw off easily.
I like to put a rubber band around the lid for extra traction – it works every time for me. That is, when my boyfriend isn’t around to perform his masculine jar-opening duties.
