According to the The U.S. Wine Market: Impact Databank Review and Forecast for 2007, Americans are slated to drink more wine than Italians for the first time ever!
This means we only trail the French by a bit (and are expected to surpass them by 2015). The overall consumption in the US is expected to reach 3.6 billion bottles this year. This is great for wine drinkers, as an overall increase in demand = more small producers available and better prices. On the converse, this means a greater demand for higher priced bottles, which are only produced in small quantities.
However, I am delighted as a glass a day keeps the doctor away!
